Tips on Choosing your Matron of Honour or Maid of Honour or Best Man

There are many decisions to be made when you decide to wed, and one of the most difficult can be choosing someone to be your “bestie” at your wedding.  For  Ladies, you don’t want to leave people out, or hurt the feelings of others in choosing your Matron or Maid of Honour or Chief Bridesmaid.

The following tips may assist you:

  • Consider a family member or close friend
  • Who is not very busy or committed to work
  • Who lives in the town where you will be marrying, or the same town as you
  • Someone who is available for you and can help you with arrangements
  • Can organise your hens’ night, or wedding shower
  • Help you with the dress
  • Who is not financially burdened
  • Will help keep you calm on your wedding day

Choosing a best man can be tricky, and some questions arise. Should brothers be best men? Is it OK to have more than one best man (à la the royals, above)? Should you ask your best friend to be your best man if he is terrible at giving speeches? What about other friends who may feel they should have been your best man? Can women be best men? There are four main jobs:  producing the rings, organising the buck’s party, being the official witness and giving speeches.  For the groom, the best man needs to be

  • Someone you can count on
  • Who can help you plan the bucks’ night
  • and get you home again safely! (with eyebrows in tact!))
  • Keep the groomsmen on schedule
  • Not too busy or financially strapped.

Some grooms who simply cannot decide, put the jobs in a hat and have the groomsmen draw a role out!  Perhaps the other wedding party attendants or those who have missed out on being in the wedding party could feel special and involved:

  • Being an official witness
  • Doing a reading during the ceremony
  • Producing one of the rings
  • Helping set up the signing table (and looking after important things like Certificates/Sand)
  • Reading the telegrams
  • Acting as an Usher or MC
  • Playing the music
  • Baby minder!

You will find that your guests will be happy to help out if you need them to, so don’t hesitate to ask.  Your Guests want your wedding day to go well and usually feel very honoured to have a special role on your special day.  Best wishes and enjoy your wedding lead up!
